Presently, there are no records of infectious amphibian chytrid fungi (Batrachochytrium spp.) on New Guinea (Bower et al. 2017, 2019). There is a risk that human activities may introduce these fungi to the island. While there is no known significant impact on closely-related microhylids in Australia, there are records of declines caused by chytridiomycosis on direct-developing species in other families. Therefore, should chytrids be detected on New Guinea, this species should be re-assessed as a matter of urgency as it could be at risk of infection and decline (Melanesia Red List Assessment Workshop 2019).

Unknown Formerly, this species was known only from the type locality, 7 km north of the village of Konti (about 12 km north-east of Serui), and its vicinity, on Yapen Island, in Papua Province, Indonesia. It might also have been recorded at a second locality approximately 25 km west of the type locality, however this requires confirmation and has not yet been mapped. The type locality is 650 m asl. Additional localities have since been provided far to the east of the type locality in the Hunstein Mountains of East Sepik Province and the Bewani and Torricelli mountains of West Sepik Province in Papua New Guinea. This species has now been recorded at an elevation range of 210-1,200 m asl (Kraus and Allison 2006). This species might be present in the Pulau Yapen Tengah Nature Reserve and the Hunstein Range Wildlife Management Area.

Therefore, a common analog species should be identified and the capacity for ex-situ conservation (e.g. captive assurance populations and genome banking) should be developed in country. There is a high risk that the introduction of chytrids could be caused by human activities, “enforcing quarantine measures through policy changes, investing in compliance, promoting education, and minimizing risks, including transportation of infected sources” (Bower et al. 2019) is strongly recommended (Melanesia Red List Assessment Workshop 2019).
